On March 18, 1995, Henry Watkins “Hank” Skinner was convicted of murdering his girlfriend, Twila Busby, and her two adult sons, Randy Busby and Elwin Caler. The three individuals were brutally murdered on December 31, 1993 in Pampa, Texas, as Twila was bludgeoned to death and the two sons were stabbed.
It has been fifteen years since Skinner’s conviction, and in March, 2010, just thirty five minutes before Hank was scheduled to be executed, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a stay of execution in order to consider Skinner’s request for DNA testing, something that was not done during his trial in 1994. Ultimately, while the Supreme Court ruled in Skinner’s favor, it did not grant Skinner the actual DNA testing, instead, under the Civil Rights Act of 1871, the Supreme Court ruled that Skinner could sue the county D.A.
It is not as if there wasn’t any DNA evidence to test. In fact, there were many DNA samples taken from the crime scene, including a rape kit, blood samples, samples of biological material from underneath Twila Busby’s fingernails, suggesting that she fought back at her assailant, and a windbreaker with more blood samples, human hairs, and perspiration stains. There is also evidence that another man, Twila’s uncle, had been stalking her the night of the murder and had a violent past with Twila.
Despite the plethora of DNA evidence and the pleas of seven of the 12 jurors on the case to test the DNA, the state of Texas has refused to test the samples in the Skinner case. Skinner is set to be executed on November 9th, and judging by the actions of Georgia in killing Troy Davis this past September despite so much doubt surrounding his case, we cannot assume that justice will be paid by our failing court system. We need to act now and prevent Texas from executing what may very well be an innocent man. Texas has done it before in 2004 when they executed Cameron Todd Willingham, despite expert arson evidence that could have exonerated him.
We need to act now. Please contact Gray County (TX) District Attorney Lynn Switzer and Governor Rick Perry and urge Texas to test Hank Skinner’s DNA and not to execute another man. You can also sign this petition and show your support.
Despicable Scum of the Week is a weekly look at a despicable scum. This week…
When it come to bald-faced lying, hypocrisy, corporate whoring, contrarianism, Pied Piper populism and sheer weaselness, your first Google search result would have to be Ron Paul. He says that drug laws “destroy liberty—destroy important areas like freedom of choice,” but he’s stridently anti-choice on abortion. He calls himself an “anti-corporatist,” which, coming from a Libertarian, may be the most blatantly bullshit statement of the entire 2012 presidential campaign. He is currently floating the idea of impeaching the president over the assassination of Anwar al-Awlaki but remained remarkably quiet about the countless war crimes committed during the entire George Fucking W Bush presidency. Jon Stewart may call him one of the most consistent politicians in Washington but that’s easy when Ron refuses to answer any questions about his Libertarian corporatism. Try to pin him down on any position regarding market regulation, the corporate-induced financial collapse or the Slimebucketocracy of Wall Street and (if he’s in a public forum) he’ll immediately divert the conversation towards one of his populist positions and away from his extremist free market, regulation-free ultra-capitalism. The man will trip over himself in his determined efforts to not answer a question directly. A whackjob among whackjobs, Ron Paul is a babbling, frequently incoherent, pseudo-religious zealot who proves decisively that Libertarianism is political Scientology.
A quick perusal of Ron’s 2012 campaign website shows enough back-swill bilge to make any Left-leaning potential Paul supporter cringe. One writer on the site claims that foreign policy spending is “most of [the] annual deficit,” by using the happy math of including the entire Department of Defense budget as foreign policy spending. The site also touts Paul’s belief that life begins at conception and calls for “effectively repealing Roe v Wade,” and “removing abortion from federal court jurisdiction.” Another section calls for “ending the {Obamacare] unconstitutional mandate that all Americans must carry only government approved health insurance or answer to the IRS”–a blatant lie. The “Economy” section touts repealing the income tax, the inheritance tax and capital gains taxes. Not enough, yet? How about “A zero-percent tax rate for all Americans”? In BIG BLOCK LETTERS one section shouts “FORCED UNIONISM VIOLATES THE CONSTITUTION,” and goes on to boast that as President Paul would “continue to lead the fight to free Americans from the shackles of compulsory unionism.” How’s that for “anti-corporatist”? Oh, and by the way, that part is under a section called “Worker’s Rights.” Here’s some more anti-corporatism from the “Energy Independence” section: He blames “misguided federal action” for high fuel prices. He calls for removing restrictions on oil drilling, lifting “government roadblocks to the use of coal and nuclear power,” and eliminating the EPA. One more Ron Paul 2012 campaign website fun fact: The word “Libertarian” does not appear once on the entire site.
Even the whiney cries that Paul is being ignored in the press are pure hyperbolic bullshit. Does anyone else find it funny that a Google search of Ron Paul will reveal 20 articles in the first 10 search pages, all from the mainstream press and all with the subject, “Is Ron Paul being ignored by the mainstream media?” To be fair, some of these articles were published after Ron’s recent Daily Show appearance but also include a 6-page interview in the National Review, a Time cover story, an Esquire interview, a bunch of fawning praise pieces from the Huffington Post and countless others. You gotta wonder what Rick “santorum” Santorum and Jon Huntsman think of Paul’s lack of press coverage.
The Republican Presidential campaign field is full of loony cult figures with fanatical followers and Ron is certainly no exception. He has a devious knack for putridly folksy charm and a populist message that appeals to many on either side of the divide while avoiding the quicksand of his Libertarian underpinnings. Wanting to get the US out of war, legalizing drugs and abolishing taxes make great Siren songs but there’s a rotting, fetid corpse in the basement. Libertarianism at its core stands for the unfettered, unrestrained, unregulated, self-policed, untaxed and full-on, balls to the wall, rampaging pillage of the country by corporate interests. Period. And no amount of decriminalized pot smoke can cover the stench of that carnage. Wanna see the gates of Hell swing open and the legions of the Pits swarm the planet? Elect a Libertarian President. Whenever Paul starts blathering on about how financial collapse, rampant pollution, job losses and massive government debt are all the fault of regulations and government interference and how it will all get better when the free market starts overseeing itself without all those pesky rules to hold it back, a hedge fund manager gets his wings. He’s a loathsome, conniving, corporate hellhound and Dick Cheney clone with an aw-shucks grin and a kindly grandfather demeanor.
I’ll leave the final word on Dr. Ron Paul to David Catron in American Spectator: “Ron Paul is a fraud of the first order.”
From a single interview on The Daily Show:
Ron demonstrates his ability to count to one: “I have one goal in life politically and the goal is to make this a better country, change economic policy, change foreign policy, change the monetary policy and explain to people why we have booms and busts.” (Washington Post)
“Personally, I wish the United States would de-recognize the United Nations. …in every Congress I introduce legislation to end our membership in that organization. The UN is a threat to our sovereignty.” (Paul’s Congressional website)
What kind of gun did Jesus carry? “It has never been more important that our President be 100% committed to defending our God-given right to keep and bear arms.” (Paul’s 2012 campaign website)
Some seriously scary bullshit: “[I]n abortion, the statists have found a most effective method of obliterating freedom: obliterating the individual. Abortion on demand is the ultimate State tyranny; the State simply declares that certain classes of human beings are not persons, and therefore not entitled to the protection of the law. The State protects the ‘right’ of some people to kill others, just as courts protected the ‘property rights’ of slave masters in their slaves. […] Unlike Nazi Germany, which forcibly sent millions to the gas chambers…the new regime has enlisted the assistance of millions of people to act as its agents in carrying out a program of mass murder.” (A Ron-penned article from Libertarians for Life, circa 1981.)
You’re doing a heck of a job, Ronny:
Socialism causes famine: “All I know is if you look at history and if you compare good medical care and you compare famine, the countries that are more socialistic have more famines. If you look at Africa, they don’t have any free market systems and property rights and they have famines and no medical care. So the freer the system, the better the health care.” (Crooks and Liars)
Ron Paul’s happy, magical, Christian fantasyland: “The founding fathers envisioned a robustly Christian yet religiously tolerant America, with churches serving as vital institutions that would eclipse the State in importance. Throughout our nation’s history, churches have done what no nation can ever do, namely teach morality and civility. Moral and civil individuals are largely governed by their own sense of right and wrong, and hence have little need for external government. This is the real reason the collectivist Left hates religion. […] The secularists wage an ongoing war against religion, chipping away bit by bit at our Christian heritage.” (Atheism.About.com)
Watch this interview from the Daily Show carefully to see multiple examples of Paul’s remarkable ability to convolute any question into an insane non-answer.
This blog post from The Hill explains Paul’s zombie master influence on Republican policy and how that influence is driving us all into the dirt.
This excellent analysis from Mother Jones exposes the utter crapness that is Ron’s non-health care policy.
Former Reagan administration douchebag Jack Kerwick in American Spectator calls Paul a bottom-feeding dung beetle. (Okay, Kerwick doesn’t actually call him that…)
Even this high school student in Albany, NY has Paul figured out.
Think Progress on Ron’s claim that Social Security and Medicare are unconstitutional.
A blogger on the excellent website Addicting Info spells out “10 Reasons Not to Vote for Ron Paul” far better than I ever could. If you don’t check out any of the other resources in this column, at least read this one.
National Review Online’s extensive interview with Paul.
The Washington Blade’s great summary of how Ron’s “be responsible for yourself” position on health care worked so well for his campaign manager.
About.com’s Atheism section has this detailed article on Paul’s bizarro views on church and state.
Happy Friday! It’s the weekend of 9/11 and you know what that means… crazy security and threats of terrorism! Before you pack up for your weekend in the fallout shelter, take a minute and read today’s news!
Gays Trump Terrorists First Oklahoma state representative (R) claimed that black people don’t work as hard as everyone else, and now she brings us this little gem: homosexuality is more dangerous than terrorism because we have to deal with it every day. Makes sense, right? She also implied that AIDS is a “gay” disease, which in 2011, is inexcusably ignorant.
FDNY Battalion Chief Reflects on 9/11 This is a really interesting interview and, with 9/11 looming around the corner, something that is a very worthwhile read. Please take a minute to read and reflect.
Cantor is Whining… Again Eric Cantor attempted to put out a half-hearted statement, attempting to show a molecule of support for jobless Americans. He stated though he would be willing to possibly, maybe, work on a jobs bill with President Obama, taking his bill to the American people would be the wrong approach. Of course – doing anything other than the “Republican way” would be the wrong approach, according to any member of the GOP. Barack Obama can’t win, but the American people could if members of Congress could just grow up and do what’s best for the country.
Obama Changes the Conversation Several years after the jobs crisis began, Barack Obama finally decided to address the issue with a speech Thursday night. I’m not sure how much Obama changed the conversation as much as just caught up with the rest of America, but either way, it was a good thing and is FORCING members of our government to start talking about it, even if they do nothing else.
Abbas Vows to Proceed With Statehood Wisely ignoring veiled threats from the United States, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas still plans on petitioning the United Nations for statehood. Good for them – hopefully the United Nations will do the wrong thing. It may be the “unpopular” view for Americans to support a Palestinian State, but something has to be done about a people who have no rights, live in poverty, and are controlled by another country. Taking their case to the United Nations is a peaceful and legitimate way to get what they want, what they need, and I for one support them.
Bush Takes Credit for Bin Ladin Of course he did… George Bush, the man who publicly said that he doesn’t think about Bin Ladin very much, said in an interview, “The work that was done by intelligence communities during my presidency was part of putting together the puzzle that enabled us to see the full picture of how bin Laden was communicating and eventually where he was hiding. It began the day after 9/11.” How do these people say things like that with a straight face?! I mean, really!
41 Exonerations in 9 Years In Texas alone, there have been 41 exonerations, due to DNA evidence, in 9 years. Yet, despite these figures, Rick Perry has no issue with executing people. No shred of doubt that perhaps even just one “guilty” person might actually be innocent. He “hates” Government and preaches how faulty it is, but when it comes to state sanctioned killing, he’s positive that Government has it 100% right. This article alone should be enough to make people step back and question the death penalty.
Incendiary On a related note to the last article, there is a documentary that was made about Cameron Todd Willingham, a man who was executed by the state of Texas for killing his family. The problem is that there is overwhelming evidence that he was not only NOT guilty, but the state had the evidence before they actually killed him, yet refused to review it. I know I’d like to see this, especially in light of the fact that the Governor that gave the green light for the execution is running for President of the United States. Anybody else with me?
Thank you for stopping by for today’s news – please come back tomorrow for this week’s Saturday edition of the Daily News Drop!

Despicable Scum of the Week is a weekly look at a despicable scum. This week…

You really don’t need to go much further than Gohmert’s Congressional website (click on his name above) to realize what a babbling donut brain this psycho clown truly is. There are processed cheese products with more intelligence than Louie Gohmert. He puts the Gomer in Gohmert. Just from his site, Louie, in a video clip from an anti-choice rally, “borrows” from Abraham Lincoln and turns a Lincoln speech on the Civil War into a diatribe against abortion. In his response to Obama’s State of the Union Address he makes over half a dozen claims that the administration, the EPA and the President have all “gone to war” against small business, oil companies, energy producers, etc, etc. The Video Gallery section of his site has dozens of clips sure to cause any sane person to curl up into a fetal ball of Fear and Loathing. Even his personal biography page starts with a couple of paragraphs of red meat. But you really can’t start trashing Louie Gohmert without talking about the looming menace of…
Hello! Happy Wednesday – 2 days left in the week… you can do it! Let’s get to today’s news:
Steve Jobs Resigns Might as well get this out of the way first since it’s all over the internet. Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple today, which will undoubtedly cause a ridiculous drop in Apple stock tomorrow, and speculation will be rampant. My gut feeling is that this is health related, though I hope I’m wrong. He’s done a lot for technology and I’m sure he will pass the torch wisely.
Fighting in Tripoli “Fighters loyal to Muammar Gaddafi are putting up a stiff fight in several Tripoli neighbourhoods against rebels seeking to consolidate their grip over the capital a day after they had seized the Libyan leader’s heavily fortified Bab al-Aziziya compound.” I really have no commentary for such a serious story. The world is watching – what I would like to know is, after Libya is free of Gaddafi, what’s next?
Well This is Frightening Does America ever learn? Apparently, this country would like to have a theocratic George W. Bush as president, less than 4 years after “Dubya” left office. Really?! C’mon, America… we are not that dumb…. or are we?
Small Government? Three Texas government are suing to get God inserted into the funerals of Veterans – whether their families want it or not. “’It makes my skin crawl that liberals are attempting to drive prayer out of a funeral ceremony for our heroes,’ Texas Rep. John Culberson told Fox News, which has given significant airtime to the controversy. ‘We’re going to fix this so that no Obama liberal bureaucrat will interfere with the funeral of a hero.’” I can’t even go on about how disgusting this comment is because it’s so maddening (and there are so many things just wrong with this statement). If you’re in the military, just make sure that you’re a Christian, Conservative, and Republican, because if you’re not, the GOP will MAKE you one after you die.
Progressives Debate! In this video clip, brought to you by The Young Turks, two Progressives debate about Obama and how much he’s to blame for the current state of the nation and American Politics! I really love TYT and it’s a really interesting video that brings up quite a few good points and makes you think! I highly recommend it – watch it!
No Intent to Harm Anybody An off duty NYC police officer who has been accused and charged with raping a woman is maintaining that he didn’t mean any harm – or his attorneys are anyway. Allegedly, he approached a woman to “ask for directions” and ended up pulling his gun on her and raping her, and was only found to be an off duty officer upon arrest. I know I feel safer now in New York! Geez…. the NYPD needs to do some serious house cleaning.
In Light of the Earthquake So, the east coast had an earthquake! The west coast is laughing at us and hurling insults, and the media is still going crazy (because between New York and Washington DC, many of the media outlets *actually* felt it, as pointed out on last night’s Rachel Maddow show). As ridiculous and over the top as the response has been, it definitely got me thinking about if I was prepared for an earthquake – or any kind of natural disaster for that matter (I’m not). Are you? This article details supplies that you should have and what you should be prepared for in the event of a disaster (specifically an earthquake, but it applies to anything really) – for all of the tornados, earthquakes, floods, fires, etc that we experience in the United States, I have a feeling we’re pretty unprepared as a whole. Educate yourselves and be prepared!
Thanks for stopping by and hopefully we’ll see you tomorrow for another News Drop!

Despicable Scum of the Week is a weekly look at a despicable scum. This week…

”Next time I tell you someone from Texas should not be president of the United States, please pay attention.” — Molly Ivins
An immeasurable part of this week’s column is due to the reporting of Right Wing Watch, the premier website for documenting the batshit lunacy of the Religious Right. If I had to delve into the santorum being spewed by these nutjobs without RRW’s reporting, my brain would be seeping out of my ears. If you think the political Right is crazy, follow the exploits of the Evangelistas through RRW for a daily dose of rhetoric so vile it will make you want to pull your own liver out.
Just what we need: another moronic, ultra-conservative, corrupt, militaristic, evangelistic, misanthropic, homophobic, devious bastard president from fucking Texas. Andy Borowitz suggests a campaign slogan for Rick Perry: “What Harm Could a Governor from Texas Do?” The reason the George Shrub and Rick Perry camps don’t get along is that the two are so eerily alike. Perry is what Bush would be if Bush had gone to Texas A&M instead of Yale. All he needs to do now is announce Dick Cheney as his running mate. Now that he’s drinking from the cesspool of the campaign he is a presumed frontrunner, as he is the only candidate with hair that rivals that of the Romneytron 3000. With the hair, the ill-fitting suits, his permanent smirk and the endless stream of bible-based bullshit he spews, Perry comes off as a crooked Sunday morning televangelist. After watching him for five minutes or more you feel a gnawing urge to tell him his puppy has died, just to get that damned smile off his face.
Perry not only has great hair, he has enormous balls as well. He staged a photo-op at an evangelical Christian school where as governor he signed bills restricting abortion services and prohibiting Gay marriage. In 2010 he held a fundraiser at Altira, the corporate headquarters of Phillip Morris tobacco. In signing a law requiring ID to vote, Rick said, “This is what democracy really is all about.” Perry touts his state’s balanced budget but fails to mention that he balanced it using the same federal stimulus dollars he so vociferously denounces. Thanks to very generous donations to Rick from various corporations and individuals, Perry has showered Texas with nuclear waste and chicken shit. Billionaire Harold Simmons has given over a million dollars to Rick over the past decade, which had nothing at all to do with the nuclear waste processing plant that Simmons is now building in the state. Similarly, a $150,000 donation given by a Mississippi poultry company to Perry wasn’t in the least bit associated with the $500,000 state grant given to the donor to build a chicken processing plant near Waco. (Los Angeles Times) But what else should you expect when you elect Mr. Haney as your governor?
