East vs. West: Longshore Unions in America

This post is part of the “Marks of Capital” weekly column, which provides reporting, commentary, and analysis on stories related to labor, workers rights, and union politics.

The International Longshoremen’s Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union are a continent away in more than just geography. The ILA, which mainly represents workers on the east coast, is weak and reactionary, while the ILWU, which is predominantly a west coast organization, manages to maintain relatively militant and progressive. Though this has been true for most of their existence, it is especially clear this week.
