Welcome back to the Daily News Drop, our attempt to encapsulate the day’s news into easily digestible nuggets. Let’s get to business.
Debt Ceiling Update As the debate for the Debt Ceiling devolves into name-calling and ultimatums, two interesting points emerged. First, the new IMF Chief Christine Lagarde called for the U.S. to raise their debt limit or there would be dire consequences both within the country and around the world. Secondly, Paul Krugman had an interesting editorial where he identified the true enemy in this debate – Centrists. He brandished Obama and the mainstream Democrats with this Scarlet ‘C.’
Pat Buchanan Says that Oslo Terrorist was ‘Right’ In another example of former Conservative presidential candidate Pat Buchanan’s bigotry, he stated in an op-ed that Anders Breivik had a legitimate concern of the ‘Muslim threat’ to Europe. More shocking than the fact that Buchanan would spout hatred like this is that a supposedly ‘liberal’ network (MSNBC) would continue to pay him to be a contributor.
More Journalistic Freedom away from Corporate Media A really interesting article from Alternet looking at how Keith Olbermann’s demeanor and television show has evolved since his contentious departure from MSNBC. It’ll really be interesting to see if Keith will tackle topics that have been taboo up until this point in the corporate media.
Congressman Resigns Due to Teen Sex Scandal David Wu, a Democratic Congressman from Oregon, announced that he will resign because of an accusation of unwanted sexual conduct by a teenage daughter of a campaign donor. Hopefully Wu, whose mental health has previously been questioned during the 2010 campaign, will seek some help for the troubles that he is obviously experiencing. Also, if a crime did occur, he should obviously be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
James Murdoch Implicates Murdoch Board With a mishap of an answer, James Murdoch insinuated that the Murdoch Board didn’t do their due diligence in their oversight of News of the World. As scandalous as this sounds, it looks more and more like this scandal will not move beyond the immediate supervisors of the British tabloid.
Dan Choi Billed for DADT Discharge Dan Choi, a former Lieutenant who was discharged from the military under their Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, was sent a bill for $2,519.18 to repay for the remainder of his service contract. He was unable to finish his contract because he was kicked out for being gay. This is a disgrace. Both the President and the Department of Defense are opposing this action started by the IRS and Veterans Affairs. If you’d like to sign the petition, you can find it here.
Fantasy Novel Provides Insight into Reality With the popularity that George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga (Also now a TV series on HBO entitled Game of Thrones), its possible to look at the work and see if it has any redeemable lessons that we can take from it and apply to our reality. This was a fun piece from The Guardian stating that much like Tolkien, Martin has created a series that will endure and educate.
UPDATED: Congressman Arrested at Immigration Protest Illinois Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez was arrested on the sidewalk outside the White House. He was one of eleven individuals arrested while protesting President Obama’s immigration policy which has deported more than 1 million people since he took office. At a time where politics seem to be the only reason that our elected officials do anything, it’s fantastic to see someone actually standing up for their beliefs (Thanks to Carlos Enriquez for showing me this story!)
